E-3, or Australian Specialty Occupational Visas, are non immigrant temporary work visas for Australian Nationals. An E-3 visa allows person to the enter the United States to perform work in a specialty occupation if the person is a national of the commonwealth of Australia.
Additionally, those E-3 visa applicants can apply directly at the U.S. Consulate and are not subject to the rigid and costly petition process that H-1B applicants are subject to. And while there are only 10,500 E-3 visas available per fiscal year, the fact that it is a relatively new visa classification, coupled with it being made available only to Australian Nationals, means the demand is not nearly as high as with H-1B's.
The applicant must possess the nationality of a nation designated as eligible under the Immigration Law. To date, Australia is the only Country;
The applicant must meet the requirements of working within an occupation that requires theoretical and practical application of an area of highly specialized knowledge, what is known under the Immigration Law as a "specialty occupation";
The applicant has a bachelors degree or higher, (or its equivalent), to enter the occupation in the United States
